Support Community-Led Ebola Containment in Uganda

Children living in communities along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo border continue to face increased vulnerability during the Ebola outbreak due to frequent population movement and close interaction within schools. Thanks to your generous support, Development Alert is strengthening school health networks to ensure educational institutions become centers of disease prevention, early awareness, and community resilience.

Working alongside district education officials, school administrators, teachers, and Village Health Teams, our teams continue delivering age-appropriate Ebola awareness sessions that teach learners how the disease spreads, how to recognize symptoms, and the importance of regular handwashing and early reporting of illness. School health clubs have become active platforms where students practice proper hygiene, organize peer-to-peer awareness campaigns, and encourage classmates to adopt healthy behaviors both at school and at home.

Parents are also benefiting from these activities. Children are returning home with practical health messages that spark important family conversations about hygiene, disease prevention, and community responsibility. Handwashing stations at schools continue serving hundreds of learners each day, creating safer learning environments while reinforcing healthy habits that extend beyond the classroom.

Cross-border collaboration between neighboring schools is helping ensure that prevention messages remain consistent regardless of which side of the border children live or study. This shared approach strengthens regional preparedness while protecting one of the most vulnerable populations.
