Protecting Vulnerable Border Families Through Cont

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

The declaration of Uganda as Ebola-free has brought renewed hope to families across the country, but for communities living close to the Democratic Republic of Congo, preparedness remains a daily priority. The continuing Ebola outbreak in the DRC—with more than 4,400 confirmed infections and over 2,000 reported deaths—highlights the need for sustained community education and cross-border vigilance.

Development Alert continues working with vulnerable families in border communities to ensure that accurate, practical health information remains accessible. Community outreach activities focus on helping residents understand the importance of early reporting, appropriate hygiene, cooperation with health authorities, and avoiding stigma toward people affected by disease.

Particular attention is given to households that may have limited access to health facilities because of distance, poor roads, financial constraints, or other barriers. Community volunteers help bridge this gap by taking prevention messages directly to households and connecting families with local health structures when concerns arise.

Women, youth, traders, transport workers, teachers, and religious leaders are being encouraged to act as community champions. Their involvement helps ensure that health messages reach different groups and are reinforced through trusted social networks.

The emergency response motorcycle continues to support these activities by making it easier for field teams to travel between scattered communities and deliver educational materials and essential supplies. This mobility is especially valuable when rapid follow-up is needed.

Uganda's success proves that communities can overcome serious health emergencies when they are informed, organized, and supported. Your generosity helped strengthen that capacity, and continued support will ensure that border families remain protected, informed, and ready to respond to future health threats while the DRC continues its difficult battle against Ebola.
