Project Report | Dec 11, 2023
Activities of the Housing Rights Legal Clinic

By Maria Silvia Emanuelli | Coordinator

In the past months, the Legal Clinic “María Luisa Marín” has been strengthened through the work of HIC-AL and the Universidad Iberoamericana. We carried out training sessions for law students to provide them with knowledge and tools to address cases of violations of the right to adequate housing from a human rights perspective. We also gave advice and orientation to 8 cases of vulnerable people who were evicted and people who were at risk of eviction. Likewise, in collaboration with grassroots movements, the Clinic organized a training program carried out throughout November. This program was aimed at vulnerable populations, particularly individuals, communities, and indigenous people in Mexico City, and sought to provide them with tools that would enable them to understand, defend and realize their human right to adequate housing, thus promoting active participation in decision-making processes, as well as actions to demand this and other related rights. The sessions were also planned in a way that they would not be isolated activities, but rather that they were also a moment to identify alongside the participants the main problems and violations of the human right to adequate housing and other related rights that they face. With this information, the Clinic will plan future sessions that address these issues and will also be able to get an overview of the current situation of this right, contributing to the strengthening of the strategies that are being implemented to improve access to the human right to adequate housing in Mexico.
