An Update on Samuel

By Sarah | Family Support Worker

Cheeky Samuel loves the park!
Cheeky Samuel loves the park!

This is an update on Samuel, who was born with heart defects, requiring surgery while he is growing.

Samuel is now almost two years old and doing really well, but his heart condition means he still needs constant supervision. Like any other toddler, Samuel wants to run around all the time but his parents Vicky and Rick have to keep him as calm as possible. His little heart can’t take too much exertion. He can’t be allowed to cry too much as if he does, he could go into cardiac arrest. If he coughs, he has to be monitored too, as too much coughing can make him sick. On occasion, he’s turned blue as his heart just can’t take in enough oxygen.

Rainbow Trust is still supporting Vicky and Rick, and I’ve now been with the family for two years. They all welcomed me into their home from day one and I’ve supported them in many different ways over the last two years. From transport to hospital appointments, support in hospital during Samuel's open heart surgery and respite for Vicky when things have just got too much.

When I’m visiting the family at home, I can watch Samuel, which gives Vicky time with big sisters Daisy and Betsy. Samuel still wakes up constantly during the night, so having me there to look after the children during the day means that Vicky can relax a little bit, when she needs to. I can see that having that extra support makes a huge difference to the family’s exhausting existence and I look forward to every visit.
