On behalf of American Friends of Asian Rural Institute (AFARI), we are delighted to report the successful completion of the 12-month projects by the 2024 Tarr Fellows. This cohort included eight outstanding leaders who, after their training at the Asian Rural Institute (ARI), returned home and implemented impactful initiatives in their rural communities.
Over the past year, these fellows have demonstrated exceptional dedication and creativity in addressing the unique challenges facing their regions. In Cameroon, Tangka Eric Dindze worked to build local capacity for community agriculture and leadership development, empowering families with more resilient food systems. In Indonesia, both Veny Julita and Kengo Ishida championed sustainable farming—Veny advancing women’s empowerment through agricultural training, while Kengo helped communities cultivate greater rural self-sufficiency and strengthened local food networks.
Across Rwanda, Murorunkwere Saidath focused on food security, introducing innovative agricultural techniques and training dozens of farmers in climate-smart practices. In another part of Indonesia, Junpiter Pakpahan engaged young people in organic farming, fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious growers. From Papua New Guinea, Joseph Kora’s efforts to develop robust local food systems led to stronger community cooperatives and increased access to nutritious foods.
In Vietnam, Huyng Ngoc Duc devoted his project to enhancing agricultural practices in remote villages, sharing practical techniques that improved productivity and sustainability. Meanwhile in India, Gabriel Gonmei supported vulnerable communities through integrated farming approaches, raising incomes and boosting food security, while Channappa Gaiangappa guided rural groups in adopting sustainable agriculture and natural resource management.
Although each project was unique in design and context, they have collectively transformed hundreds of lives and planted new seeds of hope and resilience in their communities. The 2024 Tarr Fellows truly embodied the ARI values of servant leadership and environmental stewardship, and AFARI is proud to support their work as they continue to shape a more sustainable future.
