The Tarr Fellowships have made a profound impact on grassroots leadership and community transformation across Asia and Africa. Fellows—rural leaders trained at the Asian Rural Institute—applied their experiences to initiatives ranging from women’s economic empowerment and organic agriculture in Cambodia and India, to gender-based violence prevention and capacity-building for displaced women in Cameroon. These projects fostered self-confidence, generated new sources of livelihood, improved food security, and empowered marginalized groups like widows, Dalits, persons with disabilities, and children at risk.
Beyond immediate benefits, the fellowships enhanced participants’ skills in community organizing, broadened professional networks, and cultivated resilience in the face of adversity. The financial and moral support provided by the fellowship has been described as transformative, enabling leaders to implement holistic projects, connect with global partners, and inspire hope among communities facing chronic poverty, conflict, and exclusion. A recent evaluation of Fellows emphasized the value of learning exchanges, the flexibility to adapt their work to real needs, and the lasting sense of belonging fostered through the Tarr Fellowship community. It is thanks to supporters like you that these Fellowships are possible. We extend our gratitude for your support and investment in Rural Leaders.
