Support for Afghanistan

Thank you so much for your support of this project. I’m writing to share some updates from ActionAid’s emergency response in Afghanistan. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about and act in response to this crisis.

As winter approaches, there are almost 20 million people – just under half the population – living in acute food insecurity in Afghanistan, with the vast majority of the population also living below the poverty line. Afghans are now waiting for the next harvest season so that they may be able to eat again. However, the combination of drought; extremely high food, fuel, and fertilizer prices; and a reduction in international grant support means that prospects for the people of Afghanistan are dire.

As part of its response to the recent earthquake, ActionAid and its partners have supplied 1,000 families with food packages, as well as providing 388 families with unconditional cash transfers to help them recover. We have also worked to provide life-saving food support to 10,000 families in other parts of Afghanistan as we look to provide long-term to support Afghan families. ActionAid is on the ground working to provide shelter support before the winter arrives.

Following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan in June 2022, which has killed at least 1,000 people, injured more than 6,000, and affected around 30,000 more, ActionAid is providing lifesaving support to the families in some of the worst-affected areas.

The earthquake has exacerbated the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country, where nearly 20 million Afghans face acute hunger, and has disrupted essential services making it extremely difficult for people to access clean water, shelter, and medical support. ActionAid is on the ground supplying food, water, and cash transfers to support over 1,000 families who have been impacted by this disaster. ActionAid is committed to proving both short and long-term support to affected Afghans, and we are providing permanent housing to 50 families, while still working to mobilize further resources.
