How do we respond during compounding crises?

By Ehab Elsawaf | Senior Major Gifts Officer

The devastation caused by last years' earthquake in Afghanistan was compounded by the country’s limited health infrastructure and ongoing experience with conflict, drought, and climate disaster. Our work to support vulerable communities was especially critical as an influx of displaced people arrived in cities without a way to pay for food, rent, or fuel to heat their homes.

Thanks to your support, ActionAid has provided 10,000 families across Afghanistan with:

  • Cash support for food, fuel, and heating equipment.
  • Winter clothing, blankets, and pillows.
  • Emergency food assistance and safe water.
  • Sanitation and hygiene support, including hygiene kits for women and girls.
  • Counseling support for displaced people, to help address the stress and anxiety of the situation.

Our unique humanitarian signature is designed to meet short and long term needs in the face crisis. It is our federation-wide, nonnegotiable approach to preparedness, response, and recovery which all interventions must adhere to. Examples of our signature include:

  1. Shifting the Power: ActionAid’s presence and relationships with local organizations in communities where we work are enhanced through our response, continually expanding on local capacity. We enable local leadership to design and implement programs, and support local leaders to access national funding and advocacy opportunities.
  2. Accountability to Affected Communities: Effective humanitarian response means that all stakeholders are accountable to affected communities. ActionAid works with communities and local organizations to support them to hold powerful decision makers to account, and to ensure that they are responding appropriately to the needs expressed by the communities themselves.
  3. Sustainability and Resilience: Underlying the Humanitarian Signature, it is crucial to link emergency response to resilience-building and longer term sustainable change, including empowering individuals, training them to know and advocate for their rights, and addressing underlying inequalities through all of our programming.
Thank you for being a champion of this work! If you can, please consider sharing this project within your network so we can continue to support families in Afghanistan.
