Taking to the road with books and vets!

Working in rural villages with the mobile library
Working in rural villages with the mobile library

In an age dominated by technology, the simple pleasure of immersing oneself in a book often gets overshadowed.

Many of the children arriving at Globalteer's Picaflor House exhibit notably low levels of literacy, especially those from rural villages who lag behind their urban counterparts. This discrepancy can be attributed to several factors, including the limited resources available in rural settings, the comparatively lower quality of education, and the prevalence of languages other than Spanish in Peruvian villages.

Luckily, we recently secured a grant from a UK-based charity that enabled us to acquire 293 books for our library. This acquisition has revitalized the children's enthusiasm for reading, thanks to these exciting new resources. With the guidance of our dedicated teachers and volunteers, we can effectively elevate the children's literacy levels in an engaging and imaginative manner through the utilization of these new books.

Expanding the Horizons of Literacy

Picaflor House boasts a mobile library as well, which we utilize to deliver books to remote villages. This initiative extends our outreach to a significantly larger number of children, granting access to reading materials they otherwise wouldn't have.

The Mobile Library operates in close conjunction with Picaflor House, working diligently to enhance educational prospects in isolated rural regions. Launched in 2022, this library initiative transports books, educators, and learning resources to five distant communities surrounding Cusco. Throughout the year, we offered assistance to children aged 3 to 16 across these five villages.

This endeavor carries profound significance, particularly given the backdrop of the pandemic, which exacerbated educational inequalities. Rural children, originating from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, encountered substantial obstacles in accessing online education during this crisis.

Cambodia Volunteers

One of our most popular projects for volunteers is at Globalteer's Helping Hands School in Cambodia. Volunteers consistently lend their assistance within the classrooms, and this year, we were fortunate to have a volunteer with a specific focus on supporting our social worker. Possessing prior experience as a social worker in her home country, she shared invaluable insights into techniques and processes she had employed. As a result, we have been able to enhance our record-keeping and case follow-up procedures.

Earlier in the year, another volunteer, a highly skilled artist, joined our ranks. She adorned two of the classrooms and the desktops with vibrant full-scale murals, adding a burst of color and life. Additionally, we upgraded to superior-quality whiteboards that offer enhanced functionality for easy erasing.

A notable event took place this year – the Giant Puppet Parade. This proved to be an extraordinary experience for our students, showcasing the finest aspects of Siem Reap and its numerous community development organizations. As this month draws to a close, we eagerly anticipate a school excursion to visit and learn from one of these organizations, marking the continuation of our staff training workshops.

Our Mobile Veterinary Clinic's trips to rural Peru

A group of pup's journey commenced on a garbage dump near a rural settlement in Cusco, Peru. In Peru, feral dogs frequently find their way to garbage dumps in search of food. Regrettably, these dogs often pose problems for both local villagers and dump workers. They form packs that can turn aggressive to safeguard their limited resources and even venture beyond the dump to prey on livestock. Dogs dwelling in such environments endure brief and harsh lives marked by disease, hunger, fights, and, all too often, they are culled by nearby residents and dump workers.

The Rescue of the pups

During a healthcare outreach effort by Globalteer's PAWS veterinary team in a village, local inhabitants alerted us to a litter of pups born near the village, offspring of feral dogs from the garbage dump. To provide these pups with a better life than that of the dump, we decided to rescue them. Following a thorough examination by our veterinary professionals, the pups were deemed healthy. Several male pups found homes within the village on that very day. In these villages, male dogs are favored over females as females can contribute to unwanted litters. We committed to returning regularly to monitor, spay, and neuter the pups once they matured, and we succeeded in placing most of the pups with villagers.

Later that day, as we arrived in another village for a dog health campaign, the villagers inquired about the rescued pups in our care. It turned out they had their own litter of pups on their garbage dump. Swiftly, within half an hour, they collected the pups and entrusted them to us. We now had eight more pups to find homes for. However, with shelters at full capacity, quick and secure adoptions were imperative.

Facilitating Pup Adoptions

Cusco hosts several rescue shelters, but these predominantly house older dogs. PAWS collaborates with these shelters to provide veterinary care, spaying, and neutering to enhance the dogs' adoptability. While puppies are generally easier to place, careful consideration is required to ensure their placement in safe and caring homes. Through collaboration with animal groups, we successfully secured adoptive families for all the pups within a few weeks, aided by the assurance of ongoing veterinary support and spaying/neutering once the pups matured.

Thank you for your support!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of our generous donors. Your unwavering support has been the cornerstone of Globalteer's success, driving us forward and making our impactful work possible. Your kindness and dedication have enabled us to make a tangible difference in the lives of the kids & animals we serve. Truly, it is not possible without your compassion and commitment. Thank you for making everything we do possible!
