Global Impact Update: Stories from Our Work Abroad

Helping Hands School in Cambodia

With new students joining the school, our staff have really pushed their limits to consistently deliver better quality education and social care services to the whole community. Over the course off the last couple of years, it became too difficult for many of the older students to continue at Helping Hands. They need more support and have more commitments to balance. So, it is encouraging for everyone to see the new group of younger students coming in, keeping the total number of students just below 300.

There are a total of 15 different class groups, which means the teachers at Helping Hands are able to dedicate enough time and attention to each individual. It is also makes the scheduling tricky, but our Head Teacher stays on top of that. It would be great to see our plans to improve the classroom and kitchen facilities continue. Right now, it feels like we are operating at full capacity.

These months of the year have always been a hard time for farmers in Cambodia; the weather is dry and becoming ever hotter until the rain comes again. Many local people also say that they feel this season has been getting drier and hotter in recent years. So, we were lucky to have Owen volunteering with us for six weeks. The garden continues to produce vegetables, and potatoes and pumpkins have been planted. Students and staff have all been responsible for their part in the watering schedule, and will be happy to plant more when the rain comes.

PAWS dog welfare project in Peru

Our mission continues to focus on providing quality and safe healthcare to the roaming animals throughout Cusco and the surrounding villages. PAWS works to ensure that all surgeries are completed in a sterile environment while considering the animal's well-being throughout the healing process. We have continued our health and education campaigns in rural communities, collaborating with 16 villages and 3 shelters.

Our Mobile Veterinary Clinic traveled to 16 rural villages last quarter for health campaigns. Many of these villages are deep in the Andean mountains, down switchback dirt roads dotted with the occasional alpaca or donkey. Due to the remoteness of some towns, villagers would not have access to any veterinary services if not for the Mobile Veterinary Clinic, so it is crucial to journey into the communities outside of Cusco.

With this in mind, PAWS tries to visit villages every three months to offer animals deworming, vitamins, and vaccinations. Additionally, if an owner brings in a sick or injured pet, our staff can assist the owner in the best way to help the animal. Sometimes, this means providing medication or cleaning a wound. For neutering campaigns, PAWS goes to villages approximately every six months, depending on the population of puppies in the town and the need for spaying and neutering. This quarter, we were able to provide 70 surgeries.

Picaflor House Project in Peru

Picaflor House has been buzzing with activity this quarter. We had the opportunity to celebrate several holidays, and your donations enabled us to bring extracurricular activities to the children during their school break. Additionally, we are excited to welcome new staff and interns to our team, allowing us to offer extra programs for our students to continue our mission of empowering young minds and curating safe environments for the children and teens of Oropesa.

Along with supporting the physical and professional development of the children who come to Picaflor House, we also strive to create a safe and fun environment that promotes the growth of mental well-being. A huge part of this work is giving our students the freedom to play and embrace creativity, especially during their holiday breaks.

Thanks to your generous donations, the holiday season was a perfect opportunity for us to share joy with our students. In December, we celebrated La Chocolatada Navidena, a Peruvian tradition dating back to the 1930s. How could you not love a holiday centered around sharing hot chocolate and Panettones. Santa Claus visited Picaflor House and the local community of Kallarayan as part of the festivities, bringing presents and holiday cheer.

Most recently, students celebrated Semana Santa by searching for candy, crafting paper bunny ears, and playing an assortment of games designed by our teachers. The children were thrilled to celebrate the holidays, and their smiles reminded us why we started this initiative. Thank you for your support in making our work a reality!

Child Protection and Women Empowerment

Our NGO Assistant, Larissa, facilitated our Child Protection Model. As part of her internship, Larissa also created a project centered around Women's Empowerment. This innovative course will be delivered to the teens in Oropesa as an effort to remind young ladies of their importance and right to respect. The class will delve into self-esteem, honor important women role models in Peru and worldwide, and work to prevent relationship violence and damaging stereotypes. We are dedicated to teaching children and teens about their rights to feel secure physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Rural Sports in Cambodia

This year we have organised a large Sport Festival Event that included teams of students from all of the outreach schools. There were teams of students, with each school bringing their own horde of supporters, with a total around 1000 people attended. They all had Nom Banchok, a traditional Khmer noodle breakfast, and plenty of water! It was a hot day but that did not stop the students putting 100% effort into all the games.

The staff also worked very hard to make the day a huge success. In the closing ceremony, 73 sets of sportwear were given out to members of the teams for each event, to huge cheers and applause from everyone! There were also speeches made by several of the teachers from the local schools. They all spoke about how proud they were of their students for their determination and positive attitude, and also added that they were very grateful to Globalteer and Helping Hands School for hosting such a wonderful event!

The Goals for Girls initiative aims to educate high school girls about leadership by integrating sports into the program. In Cambodia, girls are typically excluded from participating in "sports" and relegated to the side-lines once they reach a certain age. Goals for Girls empowers young women to reclaim the sports field and discover the various roles they can play, both on the field and in broader society.

Visitors to our program always notice that our girls have so much confidence and join in with sport classes without hesitation. This is not always the case in rural Cambodia and we are proud that they have received so much encouragement. The introduction of the dance aerobics classes, and some special girls-only activities has really helped them.

The primary factor of utmost importance is our provision of female coaches who offer assistance and guidance without any judgment. With female coaches leading the sessions, girls are immediately introduced to role models whom they can admire and emulate. These sessions concentrate on defining leadership and identifying various forms of leadership observed in their surroundings, while also exploring potential leadership roles that the girls can undertake both presently and in the future. The objective is to empower the girls, instilling in them the confidence to pursue their aspirations and become future leaders.

Thank you!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of our generous donors. Your unwavering support has been the cornerstone of Globalteer's success, driving us forward and making our impactful work possible.
Your kindness and dedication have enabled us to make a tangible difference in the lives of the children and animals we serve. Truly, it is not possible without your compassion and commitment. Thank you for making everything we do possible!
