SUPPORT INCLUSIVE LITERACY PROGRAMME IN GHANA
The "Read and Narrate" Literacy Initiative is a groundbreaking project launched by Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG) to empower school children by fostering a love for reading and storytelling. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) by integrating literacy activities with climate awareness storytelling. Through this program, we aim to create an inclusive and engaging reading culture where students not only enjoy reading but also develop the confidence and skills to share their literary experiences with peers. By doing so, we seek to promote literacy, enhance verbal communication, and instill creativity among young learners, preparing them for lifelong learning and personal development.
The primary objective of the "Read and Narrate" initiative is to encourage students to develop a habit of reading while improving their ability to articulate and express themselves through storytelling. By providing students with access to books and interactive storytelling sessions, the project creates an environment that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication. The initiative is designed to be interactive and engaging, allowing students to read various storybooks and share their interpretations in group discussions. This approach not only enhances their comprehension skills but also builds their confidence in public speaking and storytelling.
The project primarily targets school children aged 12 to 15 years from ten (10) selected basic schools across Ghana. The initiative aims to benefit a total of 500 students, with each school selecting 50 participants per quarter to engage in structured reading and storytelling activities.
The project has successfully been launched, and over 50 students have already participated, demonstrating promising improvements in their literacy skills and overall confidence. One of the participants, Evans Asiagbe, shared a compelling testimonial on how the initiative has significantly impacted his reading abilities and those of his classmates. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing that the program has not only improved their reading habits but has also boosted their confidence in sharing stories with others.
Looking ahead, the initiative seeks to expand its reach by increasing the number of participating schools and students. Additionally, efforts will be made to integrate climate education into the storytelling process, ensuring that students gain awareness of climate change and environmental sustainability in alignment with SDG 13. Furthermore, the project will continue to engage communities by encouraging parents and teachers to support children’s reading habits both at school and at home. To scale up the initiative, YVLG is actively seeking additional funding to provide more books, training materials, and digital storytelling tools that will further enhance the learning experience for students.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners and supporters for their unwavering commitment to promoting literacy and education among young learners in Ghana. We invite further collaboration and support to sustain and expand the "Read and Narrate" initiative, ensuring that more children develop the skills and confidence necessary for their academic and personal growth.
