Fostering a Reading Revolution: Empowering Ghanaian Children Through Storytelling
Young Visionary Leaders Ghana proudly introduces the “Read and Narrate” Literacy Programme a dynamic initiative crafted to promote inclusive education by nurturing a passion for reading and storytelling among school children. This initiative reinforces Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 13 (Climate Action), by creatively linking literacy with environmental storytelling. At its core, the programme aims to build an inclusive reading culture, where children not only enjoy books but also grow in confidence, expression, and environmental consciousness.
The central goal of the programme is to instill a lasting love for reading while strengthening students’ abilities to articulate ideas through storytelling. Through a combination of interactive book clubs, reading corners, and climate-themed storytelling sessions, students develop critical thinking skills, comprehension, and public speaking confidence in a supportive and fun environment.
Currently, the initiative engages children aged 10 to 14 years across 12 basic schools in Ghana, with each school nominating 40 participants per quarter, bringing the total projected reach to 480 students annually. The design encourages collaborative learning, where children read and narrate stories to their peers, helping them interpret, reflect, and respond to content in creative ways.
Since its recent launch, over 70 students have already participated in the programme, exhibiting notable improvements in vocabulary, reading fluency, and expressive communication. One such student, Linda, shared how the programme has transformed her relationship with books:
“Before this, I only read when I had to. Now, I read because I want to and I love telling the stories to my classmates. I feel brave and proud when I share.”
Looking forward, YVLG plans to scale the programme to additional schools, with a focus on rural and underserved communities. Climate literacy will be more deeply integrated into the storytelling themes, helping students become informed and responsible environmental stewards.
To ensure sustainability, YVLG is mobilizing support to provide a wider range of books, develop teacher training modules, and introduce audio-visual storytelling tools that cater to all learning styles. Parental and community involvement will also be strengthened through reading support clubs and school-community literacy fairs.
We deeply appreciate our partners, donors, and educators whose support has made this initiative possible. Together, we can ensure that every child, regardless of background, gains the confidence and literacy skills needed to thrive in school and in life. We welcome new collaborators to join us in expanding this transformative journey of storytelling, learning, and growth.
