Children’s success in school and later in life is to a great extent dependent upon their ability to read and write. In Chajul, where most parents are illiterate and their children have literally never had the opportunity to open a book before, the library is even more crucial. Thanks to your support, our library is helping bridge educational gaps in the under-resourced local school system.
For young library users like Margarita, time in the library is a powerful introduction to both literacy and learning. An avid reader, there’s nothing like a good book to ignite her curiosity and sweep her away to magical places. She loves fantasy and books about animals in the jungle. Her current favorite is Clifford’s First Snow Day.
Every Wednesday, the librarians read books to the children during story hour in the Saber Sín Limites (Limitless Knowledge) Community Library — a special time each week for Margarita. “When we’re listening to the story, we learn new words and can ask questions when we don’t understand,” she explains. “If we weren’t in the library, we’d be hanging out in the street, and this is much more fun!”
Beyond reading, Margarita also loves going to the library to play games, paint, and participate in the arts and crafts workshops. Margarita oftentimes uses the library’s clean, well-resourced, brightly lit quiet space to complete her homework. When she’s struggling with her school work, there are books and computers as resources, and she knows she can ask the librarians and Limitless Horizons Ixil’s helpful interns for assistance. She says, “I had a lot of trouble with math class this year, and the librarians helped me so much.”
By the time Margarita gets to 6th grade, she will be well equipped to apply to Limitless Horizons Ixil competitive Youth Development Program, a key to resources and support for educational success for her future. Your support helps youth like Margarita in Chajul go as far as their imaginations will take them. Thank you!
