HOPE Launches MCHC for 20,000 Villagers in KPK

Yusuf Foundation Partners with HOPE USA to Launch an MCHC to Serve 20,000 Villagers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Dear HOPE Friends,

In early 2022, Yusuf Foundation approached HOPE USA with a vision - they wanted to create a legacy of providing quality healthcare to poor communities in Pakistan.

‍Yusuf Foundation was particularly interested in helping reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate in Pakistan (currently accounting for 28% of the global total). Every 37 minutes, one woman in Pakistan dies giving birth, a total of 14,000 women annually.

Simultaneously, Yusuf Foundation sought to decrease Pakistan's Infant Mortality Rate. According to Unicef, Pakistan has the highest Infant Mortality Rate in the world. Infants here face a 1 in 22 chance of dying within a month of birth.

From here a vision was sparked - to construct three Maternal & Child Health Centers in underprivileged areas in Pakistan.

Yusuf Foundation has generously partnered with HOPE USA for the construction and operation of these MCHCs which will each provide free healthcare services to approximately 20,000 needy women and children annually.

Yusuf Foundation's Garhi Habibullah MCHC in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan launched in April 2023 (coincidentally during the holy month of Ramadan).

HOPE's Garhi Habibullah MCHC will provide prenatal, neonatal, outpatient, and even delivery services to the surrounding village community. It is the only healthcare facility providing free, quality healthcare to this remote and disadvantaged population.

The entire HOPE Team would like to take this opportunity to thank Yusuf Foundation for entrusting us with the execution of this noble mission and dream.

This is a momentous occasion for us while we work towards reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates in Pakistan.

80% of infant deaths and 33% of maternal deaths in Pakistan are preventable.

The HOPE Team prays for all our supporters who have enabled us to enact a multitude of poverty alleviation measures throughout Pakistan.

Garhi Habibullah MCHC is the first HOPE facility of any kind (healthcare, educational, vocational) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

‍‍‍Yusuf Foundation's Garhi Habibullah MCHC is the eighth MCHC in HOPE's expanding network of poverty alleviation facilities in Pakistan.

Winter Conditions Impede Access to HOPE MCHC

Dear HOPE Friends,

Last week, excessive snowfall in Azad Kashmir caused an array of issues which ultimately blocked access to roads leading to HOPE's Home School and Maternal and Child Health Center located in Chinnari, Azad Kashmir.

Chinnari is a village located at a height of 10,000 feet above ground in the remote mountaintops of Azad Kashmir. HOPE operates an MCHC which treats 100 women and children per day along with a Home School serving 200 students daily in Chinnari.

Unfortunately, as with many treacherous areas in Kashmir, roads are not properly constructed and severe weather conditions often hinder access to health and education facilities which provide basic amenities to poor populations. This is exactly the current situation as we await warmer temperatures so that the local community of 30,000 can regain access to these resources.

Prior to HOPE's MCHC becoming an established facility in Chinnari, the local community would travel three hours to access the nearest government-operated hospital. Expectant mothers and even children would often pass away during the journey. Additionally, the quality of care at government facilities established for the poor is often subpar, causing more problems than solutions.

By establishing an MCHC in Chinnari, HOPE has been able to provide free/nominal cost healthcare services to 20,000 women and children annually and prevent unnecessary death due to lack of access to timely medical care.

Similarly, the closest government school for Zakat-eligible populations in Chinnari is two hours away and parents would hesitate to send their children to traverse such long distances in unknown terrain; girls would inevitably bear the brunt of this disadvantage as their barriers to accessing education were greater than their male counterparts.

By establishing a Home School in this remote community, HOPE has been able to provide a quality education to 200 students per year, 80 percent of whom are girls who would otherwise be left behind. Since education is the cornerstone of freedom from poverty, HOPE has gone to extra lengths to ensure that marginalized children in communities such as Chinnari are given a chance to succeed.

HOPE Team Visits Kashmir Network to Distribute Aid

Dear HOPE Friends,

HOPE Team Visits Home Schools, MCHCs, Vocational Center in Azad Kashmir: 2,000 Needy People Served

Over the past two weeks, HOPE's on-ground field team in Pakistan visited our Azad Kashmir network of poverty alleviation facilities which includes 40 home schools set up in remote mountaintops, 3 Maternal & Child Health Centers, and a Vocational Training school. Altogether, our impact in Azad Kashmir spans over 60,000 Zakat-eligible people per year; 70 percent of whom are disadvantaged mothers and children.

During this trip, over 2,000 needy children participated in annual ceremonies and received school supplies such as backpacks and stationary as well as warm winter clothing and a special lunch including biryani and egg rolls. The HOPE Team also distributed blankets, biscuits, and other treats to the surrounding community.

HOPE has revived the neglected concept of home schooling in Pakistan whereby we readily remedy the difficult barriers to both supply and demand in the education sector for the poor in Pakistan. We have found that the most effective and sustainable long-term solution for education in Kashmir is the home school system.

Home schools are a cost-effective and innovative solution to addressing the availability of schools barrier that has been overlooked in Pakistan. Additionally, parents feel secure in sending their daughters to neighborhood facilities which are overseen by trusted community members. Home schools engage the communities they serve by employing educated women (whom parents trust) as teachers.

Currently, HOPE has 40 home schools in Kashmir serving 2,000 students, 70 percent of whom are marginalized girls.
