Supporting Vulnerable Families in Mexico - 2024

By Cynthia Duran | Marketing & Communications Manager

The International Community is proud to announce that its mighty network of civil society organizations continue to welcome migrants and deportees to ensure that their basic needs are met. Because of COVID-19 and other border policies that have taken place, there has been a negative long-term impact on millions of people's lives in Tijuana and the U.S.-Mexico border region. To help alleviate this issue, ICF began grantmaking since March of 2020 to local nonprofits to provide PPE, food, medicine, shelter and legal services to vulnerable migrants and deportees in the border region.

In 2024, there continues to exist limited border activity and legal immigration proceedings for migrants and deportees. This has caused thousands of immigrants and refugees to remain stuck at the US-Mexico border waiting for legal status. Lack of access to healthcare, food and employment opportunities means they are more vulnerable than ever. Shelters that have opened their doors to this population have reached maximum capacity and are struggling to provide basic services due to limited resources.

As we have in the past, ICF’s team continues to call on current and former grantees to assess the needs in their communities. We are currently working with our network of donors and other partner organizations to secure financial support and provide important necessities, including food, shelter, hygiene products, and learning playrooms to children and youth. ICF is also committed to help provide other services, including legal services, medical supplies and treatment, mental health support, and job recovery.

In these challenging times, we find inspiration in your compassion and that of our local partners - the courageous leaders who are working on the ground and taking risks to bring direct support to these communities.
