The action of Secours Catholique in its fight against exclusion takes very varied forms according to needs met locally by our volunteers. We present you here a concrete example of this diversity.
Among the care facilities existing at Secours Catholique, our day cares propose a listening, an orientation extended by a long-term support. Most of the time, these day cares are organized around basic need services (hygiene, pressing, mail adress), meals (coffee, breakfasts), workshops (cultural, educational, sports etc.). Those day cares can be open to all or specialized (homeless people, foreigners, women etc.)
In Colombes, Hauts-de-Seine, mothers, mostly single parent find comfort, material support and a playground for their children at the "Maman Secours" care of Secours Catholique's local team. At "Maman Secours", moms come primarily to meet the needs of their children. Here, these mothers can buy for a euro a pack of diapers, a set of small pots or infant formula in our community grocery.
Single mothers make up the largest share of people Secours Catholique met in the Hauts-de-Seine. In 2013, they represented 34 % of the people encountered against 25 % of couples with children. They face difficulties in housing and often struggle to meet the needs of their children for lack of resources.
Instead of meeting a person in a individual way, we favor meeting in a group and collective projects because it allows the moms, alone or not, to get out of isolation without having to tell in a repetitive way their painful story.
The objective is to live times of conviviality and well-being, with in particular workshops such as cooking or hairstyle and cultural visits. It allows these mothers to find some energy, only then, we help them to take knowledge of their rights and benefits they can claim.
Since the beginning of the year, we spent about 350 000€ on the functioning of our 140 day care, in all France.
Besides, on the international stage, over the first three months of 2015, Secours Catholique brought its support into 50 international projects, representing a little more than 2 million euros and distributed mainly in Africa, in Asia and in Latin America. We have just renewed for example a project of food safety in Mexico, the object of this project is to allow certain native communities of the region of Chiapas to develop their livelihoods via a sustainable, environment-friendly agriculture.
