Updates from the jungle in Calais (France)
In our previous report in October 2015, we gave you highlights about our actions in Calais for migrants. Since then, much has changed for the worse unfortunately. The emergency camp on the southern area of the jungle was dismantled by the French government in March 2016. The 3,000 migrants living in this area have been moved north of the jungle, bringing to 6,000 the number refugees living in abject poverty. This dismantling, brutal, generated during 3 weeks, violent clashes. The information point that Secours Catholique-Caritas France opened earlier this year on the southern area was completely destroyed.
Mariam, working in Calais tells us here how the migrants were evacuated from the land :

Since the beginning of the year, Secours Catholique-Caritas France has spent € 45,000 to help the exiles in Calais, of which € 20,000 for the installation of the information point, destroyed during the evacuation.
Today, Secours Catholique-Caritas France continues its daily actions, our teams are back in the jungle to meet the families and the people they have been following for months. But the lack of clarity on the government's position concerning the welcome of the exiles prevents us from considering new actions in the short-term.
Of course, we will keep you informed of further developments in Calais.
