We met at Beit Jala on July 12th with 9 people present. Mindy facilitated the group meeting. She and Aisha shared with us about the WOMEN DELIVER 2019, a very large conference on gender equality and empowerment that they attended in June 2019 in Canada. Their presentation was followed by Miriam’s touching question: WHAT IS YOUR DROP IN THE OCEAN? We each took turns going around the room and sharing our 'drop in the ocean', in which way are we contributing to our family and community. Afterwards, we heard updates from activities our members were involved, such as addressing the lack of basic needs such as clean water and clothing for young children, and supporting women facing a breast cancer diagnosis. We closed with a discussion about the Conference for Palestinian Midwives and Nurses, that was about to take place on July 29th.

On July 29th, we held a Study Day on the topic of “Sexual Violence and Women’s Health” that was a great success. The attendees included 23 Palestinian midwives and nurses, working in government hospitals, NGOs and UNRWA. They came from Hebron, Ramallah and Bethlehem to participate, together with members of our group, Midwives of Peace. Altogether, we were close to 40 women sitting together, listening to lectures, listening to one another, discussing, questioning and telling stories of how sexual violence affects our lives and the lives of the women we know and work with. It was both enlightening and upsetting, and it gave all of us an opportunity to learn more about the lives of the other.
The feedback we received from the participants made it very clear that this is a topic that is relevant to their work and that needs to be further explored. Our plan is to do another study day in a similar format at a venue that is geographically in the North so as to enable midwives and nurses from that region to attend. After both study days, if we have enough interested participants, we plan to create a workshop on the topic.
As always, we are very grateful for your generous support that enables us to do this work.
