The group met in a cafe, and the IEA staff joined to help with Arabic-Hebrew translation.
The women took turns to introduce themselves. They decided that in each encounter, one participant from each faith will share about their lives.
Kefya, a Muslim participant, lives in Bardala and has 20 grandchildren, despite her young age. She told us that she works in agriculture and makes soap from camel milk and olive oil , which she sells on demand. She has traveled to Italy through Ramallah’s Women Association to socialize with other businesswomen on her soap production project. The Jewish women were very curious and impressed by her.
On the Jewish side, Rachel, a religious mother of five children, shared with us about her new job. She works as a social worker in a refuge house for at risk teenage girls. This surprised the Muslim women, since they assumed that Jewish people did not go through this type of problems in their societies. The Jewish women, in their turn, were also surprised by their reaction, and we discussed that every society has good things and bad things.
We look forward to another encounter for the next month before Jewish holidays.
