HelpAge has been operating in Ukraine since 2014 and is the only international organization currently operating in Ukraine dedicated to supporting older people. We implement programs in eight regions, including in areas close to the front lines of the conflict. With the support of donors like you, we’ve been able to provide cash assistance, home-based care, psychosocial and legal support, food, hygiene items, clothing, essential items for winter, and assistive devices to more than 132,000 older Ukrainians since the start of the war in February 2022.
In the past year, we have provided psychosocial aid, medicine, and services such as home-based care to more than 13,000 older Ukrainians experiencing isolation and immobility—with trained volunteer social workers coming directly to older people’s homes, who are often alone or unable to leave. For the thousands of older Ukrainians who have been forced to flee, we created community safe spaces where older Ukrainians can access a range of free support services, socialize, share experiences, and combat feelings of isolation. With your help, older people like Olena, Tetiana, and Lyudmila can continue to rely on us for a safe space to share their stories and rebuild their lives. In the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine, we spoke with older people about what they needed the most, and they requested warm clothing, linens, and bedding, as well as firewood and heaters. They also told us that they preferred to select their most needed items themselves. In response, we organized and distributed vouchers, which older people like Hanna successfully used to purchase the items that directly met their needs.
Ukraine has the largest number of older people affected by conflict anywhere in the world—25% of the population. As millions of older people in Ukraine still face the horrors of war every day, HelpAge has been working tirelessly to provide life-saving assistance and ensure that no one is left alone or forgotten.
