Solidarity is important for political prisoners

By Florian Wiedemann | Program Manager

In March, LIBERECO held an exhibition about Belarusian political prisoners in the Scottish Parliament. The exhibition was a great opportunity for parliamentarians to learn more about the political and human rights situation in Belarus and to raise their awareness. Since then, at least 6 parliamentarians have become godparents to political prisoners, including Neil Gray, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care.

Ken McBain, the LIBERECO representative in the UK, told me about the exhibition: “It was very encouraging to speak to so many parliamentarians in my own country who care passionately about human rights, democracy and justice […]. So many parliamentarians took time in their busy days, between committee meetings and parliamentary debates to stop and talk about Belarus. I hugely appreciate their interest and desire to support Belarusians’ efforts for freedom.”

Support and solidarity are of the utmost importance for political prisoners suffering torture and inhuman conditions in Belarusian penal colonies. In an interview, former political prisoner Yury Ziankovich explained: “Public solidarity is very important for prisoners - not only political prisoners, but also others who are imprisoned without guilt. Even if the letters do not reach us, we still feel people's support. The main task of society is to obtain the release of the unjustly convicted."

Libereco is passionately committed to working for the release of all political prisoners in Belarus. Your donation enables us to raise awareness in Europe of the grave human rights situation in Belarus and the plight of political prisoners. It also allows us to provide political and mental support to them and their families by seeking symbolic godparents from all European parliaments.

Your solidarity and support are very much appreciated by us and the political prisoners – thank you!
