Thanda's After School Programmes provide something unique for over 460 children each day. While most rural schools are under staffed, under resourced and lack dedication in teachers, Thanda teaches children that learning can, and should, be engaging and fun. Our Creative Learning Curriculum uses books as themes to teach a variety of subjects.
This year the younger learners used the story the Gruffalo as a theme. They worked on their reading skills and then used the story to learn about different types of animal homes (science) and made Gruffalo masks (art, drama).
We had two book festivals as well where kids read poems and books outloud and played games about stories they had read. Our community awareness program reached over 10,000 people in the community. The kids put on puppet shows to teach others about topics such as nutrition and stranger danger.
After a recent monitor and evaluation analysis, we discovered the profound impact our programmes are having in the following areas:
Literacy
On average students improved 41 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 146% improvement over their baseline level.
Science
On average students improved 51 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 131% improvement over their baseline level.
Numeracy
On average students improved 70 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 152% improvement over their baseline level.
Empathy
On average students improve 15 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 67% improvement over their baseline level.
Critical Thinking
On average students improved 31 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 51% improvement over their baseline level.
Self-esteem
On average students improved 15 percentage points between baseline and final which represents on average a 32% improvement over their baseline level.
We have also noticed a higher baseline for those who had been a part of the Thanda programme longer than others.
We look forward to continuing to provide this much needed support for these children every day in the coming years.
Thank you very much for all your contributions.
With love,
Thanda
