Calling upon Actors of the Civil Society to promote inclusion of Indiginous people

By Kulihoshi M | National Team Leader

Changing the attitudes of local opinion leaders members of the Civil Society in DRC.

For the last three (3) months we had two online meetings with Actors of the Civil Society in Tanganyika Province focus on the situation of Pygmies in the Province. As you may know, Tanganyika Province has been a war over the years and tensions are still visible, opposing Pygmies who are the first occupants and the Bantous who came later. Generally the conflicts are connected to livelihood opportunities. Pygmies are nomad and lived on meat from wild animals in the Forest. However when Bantous cames they also got involved in hunting wild animals in the forest until they became few and no longer accessible, this threatened the very existence of Pygmies who started attacking the Bantou in order to loot their animals at home and crops so that they can survive. In the same also Bantou to revenge which is the main problem.

We also had two online meetings with actors of the Civil Society in Ituri Province, looking at the exclusion of Pygmies in National Development interventions. Generally areas that are occupied by Pigmies are not developped and has nothing as services either during colonial period, after colonial up to now. Most of the services are based in areas that populated by the Bantou. In order to survive Pigmies have only one option to attack the Bantou which is the basis of various recurrent open conflicts.

We are now engaging stateholders to prioritize services in areas that are occupied by Pygmies and strongly engage them to access the services for their development in order to create more livelihood alternatives and achieve development.

The lack of necessary funds we need has affected our capacity to intervene so that we can put on ground the desired solutions and the consequences are too high to the affected communities.  Please continue supporting our activities.
