Support sexual violence survivor-activists

By Valeria Babara | Project Contributor

A toolkit with flyers, frequently asked questions, case studies, calls to action, and an advocacy guide, is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Georgian and Russian at www.thehagueprinciples.org. The Hague Principles on Sexual Violence and a selection of tools are also available in Ukrainian. In the meantime, we continue to facilitate mentoring sessions between international criminal and human rights law specialists and Ukrainian lawyers who are working on CRSV cases in Ukraine.
In April, Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice made two important submissions:
1) The first submission was in response to the call of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for input on the development of a Policy on Slavery Crimes. In this submission, we advocated for the development of a survivor-centred prosecutorial policy that acknowledges sexual and reproductive acts as indicia of enslavement. 2) The second submission was in response to the call of the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture for the development of a report on sexualised torture. WIGJ's submission proposed inclusive definitions and understanding of sexual torture that capture the broad spectrum of acts, ensuring that survivors' diverse experiences and perceptions inform investigations and prosecutions. Both submissions were informed by The Hague Principles on Sexual Violence: https://lnkd.in/eDQsC55a. These principles guide understanding and effectively addressing acts of sexual nature, underscoring our commitment to a nuanced legal interpretation that supports justice for all survivors.

These efforts represent WIGJ’s ongoing commitment to enhancing gender justice within international criminal law. By aligning with The Hague Principles, we strive to ensure that global legal frameworks evolve to meet the needs of survivors, promoting accountability and comprehensive justice.

Join us in advocating for these necessary reforms. Your engagement helps push for a global legal environment where all survivors are seen, heard, and protected.
