Support Teach For Bulgaria Teachers

Dear supporters,

As the end of the 2022/2023 school year approaches, another cohort of Teach For Bulgaria teachers is ready to graduate from the A New Way to Teaching program. The graduation will take place next weekend in the annual reflection and graduation ceremony, when 70+ program fellows will join our alumni community.

We love sharing stories from the classrooms of our program participants, and today we are sharing a story from the classroom of one of our teachers that is graduating from the program this year. Tsvetomira is an after-school teacher at 58th Sergei Rumyantsev Primary School in Sofia and works with students in the 3rd grade.

Noise, commotion, chaos, and kids are running back and forth. Such is the usual sight in Bulgarian schools, especially during break times. However, in Tsvetomira’s classroom, the feeling is more atypical – one of calm and light, perhaps emanating from the many children’s drawings hanging on the walls.

During the lesson, Tsvetomira has found a way to ensure every student is able to learn independently and understand the material. “We read each chapter of the lesson three times and then recite it,” the children share. Tsvetomira instructs the children to plug their ears and read aloud, eliminating distractions and helping them focus on the text. Afterward, the students are encouraged to use their own words and share what they learned. Tsvetomira has introduced this way of learning because she recognises that each student learns differently - some learn better when they read the information while others while they listen to it.
