Project Report | Mar 6, 2025
From "I don't know what I'm reading" to a doctor

By Denitza Manova | Development and Fundraising Specialist

Dear supporters,

2025 is a very exciting year at Teach For Bulgaria, as this year, we are celebrating our 15th anniversary! To mark this special occasion, we are dedicating this year to looking back and sharing some of the stories from our past that perfectly portray the way that equal access to quality education can truly change students’ lives.

The first story we want to share with you as part of this series is the story of Andres.

Andres’s story starts in the small village of Dermantsi, Lovech region, back in 2013. Back then, he was in the sixth grade and had just met Tsvetomira and Violeta - the new History and Bulgarian Language teachers at “Nefoti Rilski” Primary School.

Very quickly after the first few classes in the school, Tsvetomira and Violeta realised that they would need to work hard and help Andres fill the gaps in his language and literacy skills - he could recognise the letters on the page and read the words slowly, but he couldn’t understand the meaning of the text he just read. The two teachers accept the mission and adapt their teaching methods to fit his needs and attitudes. And it worked - in large part due to Andres's willingness to learn and develop.

"The most important thing for Andres' change was that we did not look at him through the prism of low grades, through what educational results he achieved at the knowledge level. We saw in perspective that Andres had potential that he had not been able to realise because of social conditions."

Twelve years later, Andres has completed an Assistant Pharmacist degree from the Medical University in Pleven, where he is now pursuing a Medical Degree.

"I'm here because my teachers believed in me. They believed in me when I didn't believe in myself," shares Andres, looking back at his journey.

Andres’s journey is just one story that was made possible by teachers who believed in him. The training and support that Tsvetomira and Violeta received were made possible by your support throughout the years. Thank you for believing in Teach For Bulgaria’s mission!

Gratefully,
The Teach For Bulgaria Team
