Strengthening the Ukrainian Media Landscape

By Lena Fultz | Sr Business Development Associate, Private Sector

At Internews, we believe that access to timely, quality information saves lives, but in times of crisis, those who deliver that information face paramount physical and digital risks. In Ukraine, Journalists and media workers remain the targets of continued attacks.

In January alone:

Internews has been active in Ukraine since 1994. In these unpredictable times, it’s flexible funding from partners like GlobalGiving that allows us to make quick decisions that have the potential to save lives, and we continue to adapt to a changing media landscape to spread lifesaving information—first by ensuring the journalists and newsrooms on the ground can carry out their duties safely and responsibly.

Since our last update, we’ve published two reports:

  • Our USAID/Internews annual media consumption survey offerinsights into the news consumption habits of Ukrainians. Key findings included the rise of Telegram as a source of news—from 20% in 2021 to 72% in 2023. This year, when exposed to common Russian disinformation narratives, more respondents identified them as untrue rather than true.
  • Optimistic for our mission is that, despite the ongoing war, 25% of Ukrainians expressed their willingness to pay for a subscription to their preferred online media, a number which has continued to slowly increase since 2021. This is a glimmer of hope for Ukrainian media outlets seeking additional financial resources through membership models.
  • Our Internet Freedom & Resilience team publishedreport studying the digital threats faced by civil society and media organizations in Ukraine and providing guidance for digital safety experts supporting this community.

For more information, we recommend these local organizations for credible, current information on the latest attacks against media in Ukraine and disinformation about the conflict.

You make our crucial work possible. Thank you for your continued support.
