Staying Afloat and Keeping Independent Media Alive

By Lena Fultz | Business Development Officer, Private Institutions

Internews remains committed to supporting Ukrainian journalists and an independent media sector on the frontlines of war. We've been working in Ukraine since 1994 and have seen the shift in public perception firsthand. Flexible funding from partners like GlobalGiving has allowed us to act rapidly and proactively since the start of the Ukrainian war, ensuring the journalists and newsrooms on the ground are able to carry out their duties safely and responsibly.

Currently, Internews is helping our independent media and NGO partners to continue to operate during electricity shortages caused by Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and continuing to replenish personal protective equipment and first aid supplies, which we first distributed after the large-scale invasion in 2022.

We're prioritizing the safety of journalists, but also providing assistance to over 200 key national, regional, and hyperlocal Ukrainian media to ensure they are able to carry on providing high quality, reliable information to Ukrainian citizens living in all parts of the country, including supporting investigative reporting teams around the country that are gathering evidence of Russian war crimes.

In the last six years, Internews supported 536 independent media outlets in Ukraine with project activities or grants; provided training to 5,306 journalists and journalism students; provided grants and technical assistance to 99 media NGOs; supported news and information content that reached 401.6 million views and listens across TV, radio, online and social media platforms.

In such trying times, it's an honor to be a part of the push for prioritizing free and independent media and supporting the journalists who keep it alive. You make our critical work possible. Thank you for your continued support.
