Ukraine is currently considered to be one of the most mine-affected countries in the world. This leads to endangering around 14 million people and causing fear and insecurity, limiting movement and access to land for the farmers.
Some 174,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land (larger than the total landmass of Greece) is now contaminated with explosive objects.
The unexploded ordnance and mines killed 226 in March 2023 alone, in territory controlled by Ukraine.
Following the explosion of the Khakhovka Dam, the risk posed by mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) has increased significantly, as the floods have dislodged mines planted along the banks of the Dnipro River and carried them ashore. Movement may cause them to explode unexpectedly.
The Ukrainian Red Cross (URC) continues its vital activities across Ukraine, spreading awareness on the types of UXO, the threats they pose, and what to do in case of finding such an object.
As of October 2023, the URC has held over 6,522 sessions on mine danger, sharing the knowledge with 94,546 people, including kids (54,521), agricultural workers, and the state services' staff.
