Introduction

Adjah Cancer Support Ghana (ACSG) is committed to providing comprehensive support to children battling cancer. One of the critical aspects of our support involves ensuring access to essential medications. Our Medication Support Program aims to alleviate the financial burden on families and ensure that children receive the necessary treatments to improve their chances of recovery. This report outlines the activities, outcomes, and future directions of the program.

Program Objectives

  1. Provide Essential Medications: Ensure that children with cancer have access to life-saving medications.
  2. Alleviate Financial Burden: Reduce the cost of cancer treatment for families by covering the expenses of medications.
  3. Support Treatment Adherence: Encourage consistent and complete adherence to prescribed treatment regimens.

Activities Conducted

  1. Medication Provision: Supplied essential medications to 70 children undergoing cancer treatment in various hospitals.
  2. Pharmacy Partnerships: Partnered with local pharmacies to procure medications at discounted rates and ensure timely delivery to patients.
  3. Financial Assistance: Offered financial support to cover the cost of medications for families in need.
  4. Monitoring and Follow-Up: Conducted regular follow-ups with healthcare providers to monitor patients' adherence to their medication schedules and treatment progress.

Outcomes

  1. Improved Access to Medications: 70 children received the necessary medications, ensuring continuity in their cancer treatment.
  2. Reduced Financial Stress: Alleviated the financial burden on families, allowing them to focus on their child's health and recovery.
  3. Enhanced Treatment Adherence: Increased adherence to treatment regimens, leading to better health outcomes for the children.
  4. Strengthened Healthcare Partnerships: Established strong partnerships with local pharmacies and healthcare providers, facilitating efficient medication distribution and support.

Challenges

  1. Resource Constraints: Limited funding restricted the number of children we could support with medications.
  2. Supply Chain Issues: Occasional delays in medication procurement and delivery due to supply chain disruptions.
  3. Awareness and Outreach: Reaching families in remote areas to inform them about the availability of medication support posed challenges.

Future Directions

  1. Expand Program Reach: Seek additional funding to support more children and expand the program to cover a wider geographic area.
  2. Strengthen Supply Chains: Work with partners to ensure a more reliable and efficient supply chain for medications.
  3. Increase Outreach Efforts: Enhance outreach efforts to raise awareness about the Medication Support Program, particularly in remote and underserved communities.

Conclusion

Adjah Cancer Support Ghana’s Medication Support Program has made a significant impact by providing essential medications to children with cancer, thereby improving their chances of recovery and easing the financial burden on their families. Continued support from donors and partners is crucial to expanding this vital program and reaching more children in need.
