AKI-HaH Emergency Fund: recent cases

By Karen Menczer | Executive Directive, Animal-Kind International

Cooper had seizures, then a rash
Cooper had seizures, then a rash

We'll jump right into our recent AKI-Have a Heart-Namibia Emergency Fund cases since I know that's why you support this project and that's what you want to hear about.

We've seen Cooper before (and not just for his neuter appointment). He's too good of an Emergency Fund customer! Cooper was having seizures. And when they were under control he developed a rash (see photo). He wsa treated for both through the AKI-HaH Emergency Fund.

From Geesche (HaH and Emergency Fund Coordinator): "Thank you so much AKI for always being on Cooper's side having his family's back, going with them through all the ups and downs! His family is doing everything they can to make him feel better and they could not have done it without AKI's support!"

Beauty was lucky that the mobilie clinic arrived in Okahandja and that his family spotted the mobile clinic during a spay day! No one knows what happened, but one day Beauty came home with an injured tail. And because his family couldn't afford a vet, the injury became necrotic. But luckily for Beauty there is the AKI-HaH Emergency Fund and Beauty got the full service: check up, neuter, vaccination, parasite treatment, and his necrotic tail was amputated (see photo)

Ten Tiff is from Otjiwarongo. He was also lucky when his family spotted the Dr Baines' mobile clinic during a spay day in Otjiwarongo. They immediately got Ten Tiff, went to the clinic and lined him up for a checkup. Dr Baines determined that the growth on Ten Tiff's neck could be removed at the mobile clinic. And at the same time, Ten Tiff was neutered, vaccinated, and received parasite treatment.

From Geesche: "Thank you so much AKI for making sure Ten Tiff got the best vet care and his family doesn't need to worry anymore about the growth." (see photo of Tiff with his family)

Roxy from Rehoboth had transmissable venereal tumor -TVT - a cancer in dogs which is easy to treat but deadly if left untreated. Roxy is much loved by her family but because finances are tight we agreed to help out with the AKI-HaH Emergency Fund. Roxy is such a sweetheart, she was so brave during her 5 chemo sessions and she even said thank you to Dr Rakel after her last treatment (lots of kisses).Check out the photo of Roxy with her dad and you can see how loved she is.

If there was ever a cat loved unconditionally - it is definitely Ranger! The love his family has for the big boy (5.4 kg) is what we wish every animal could have!

Ranger joined the HaH family years ago when he was neutered, and later, he was helped by the AKI-HaH Emergency Fund when he had an abcess. So when he struggled to pee a couple of months ago, his family rushed him to the clinic in Rehoboth. Ranger stayed overnight at the clinic to be monitored and after Dr Rakel was able to remove urine and Ranger started to feel better he was allowed to go home with a lot of antibiotics.

But a day later Ranger suddenly went downhill. He was back at the clinic in Rehoboth. Dr Rakel had to refer him to Windhoek to a larger clinic with more options for treatment. Ranger's family got money together for a lift and they traveled 80 km to Windhoek Animal Hospital.

Ranger was immediately put on a drip and into intensive care. It didn't look good at all. We got a report from the vets that they feared his kidneys were damaged. It was a rough two days and then we got a message that Ranger is feeling better! Ranger was still very weak but he started eating and peeing! Unbelievable how happy one can be over a message that a cat is peeing : )

When the vets at WAH gave the ok for him to go home, his owner immediately jumped on the next mini bus and went to the clinic to pick him up.

From Geesche: "Ranger was happy to be back home but that was only possible because of AKI and the emergency fund! Without AKI Ranger would not have survived and his family's hearts would be broken. But because of AKI they can still love Ranger and Ranger is still bringing so much joy to his family!"

We have so many more Emergency Fund cases, but those will be for another time, another report (also, you can read about more Emergency Fund cases on the AKI Blog, link below). You can see from these 5 how important your support is to Animal-Kind International, Have a Heart-Namibia, and most importantly, for the pets and their people. THANK YOU!
