The United Nations estimates that there may be as many as 3.1 million Afghan refugees in Iran, with around 1 million of those having fled to the country since the events of 2021.
Relief International is one of a small number of international organizations working to support Afghan refugees in Iran, with a particular role covering the healthcare and education needs of some of the most vulnerable Afghan communities in the country.
Since our last update in April, over 3,200 Afghan children across six Iranian provinces have benefited from Relief International remedial school courses, helping them catch up on schooling they may have missed. These children also received school and hygiene kits to support their further teaching and support their families.
Relief International teams also constructed ten new classrooms across five schools, with nine schools receiving new classroom equipment, such as desks for pupils. Four schools also benefited from newly built or expanded water and toilet facilities so the Afghan refugee children stay healthy and happy.
Working in the Torbat-e-Jam settlement that hosts thousands of Afghan refugees, Relief International has been busy constructing a new shower block and toilet facilities.
Children at the Torbat-e-Jam and Mohajer Afghan refugee settlements have benefited from new ‘child-friendly spaces.’ These centers allow children to learn and play with one another in a safe and supervised environment managed and run by specially trained Relief International teams.
Relief International has also provided over 1,200 cash cards to cover healthcare costs for pregnant women and new mothers and over 2,000 cards for vulnerable Afghan families to cover other healthcare costs.
