Aliya, 28, was born in Afghanistan. While teaching in her country, she witnessed the deprivation of women's right to education. Sometimes she single-handedly kept a classroom running, sometimes she secretly taught them how to read and write, but ultimately, she was unable to do the work she loved.
As living under the regime's oppression became harder, she was forced to come to Türkiye, leaving behind her students, her memories, and her roots. This new beginning meant not only changing geography, but also rebuilding its entire identity. She also experienced an earthquake in a foreign country, as a woman and a refugee, but Aliya did not give up.
Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM)’s digital skills and women's employment programs were a turning point for her. She acquired technical knowledge in the trainings she attended and started to learn again, produce and dream about the future.
"I used to be someone who could only use a computer for social media. Now I can prepare presentations, attend online training, and even fix a broken tap in my house. This is freedom," says Aliya.
Aliya wants to inspire other women by saying "We've been through dark times. But when a light shines, it guides others. This training has rekindled that light in me."
