Supporting Afghan Women and Girls on the Move

Meliha arrived in Türkiye in 2019 with her husband and two children after a long and difficult journey due to insecurity and economic hardship in Afghanistan. When she was forced to leave her country, her greatest concern was her children’s health. Building a new life in a new country was not easy; however, for Meliha, the most important thing was being able to access the healthcare services her children needed.

The family applied for international protection and began trying to build a new life in Türkiye. However, Meliha’s two children were living with Beta Thalassemia Major and required regular treatment. Accessing the healthcare system, combined with language barriers and financial difficulties, made managing this process extremely challenging for the family.

At this point, the connection established with Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM) became a significant source of support in the family’s life. Through the counseling and referral process, the children’s healthcare needs were closely monitored, and the family was informed and guided on how to access health services.

For the children’s treatment, the family was referred to another city, where they were able to access regular healthcare services. During the ongoing treatment process, ASAM’s field staff provided interpretation, counseling, and transportation support. Thanks to this assistance, the children were able to receive the necessary medical care on a regular basis, and the family was able to follow the treatment process with greater confidence and security.

Meliha’s story continues to be a powerful example of how meaningful support can create a tangible difference in a family’s life. Today, Meliha and her children continue their journey with renewed strength and hope, believing in the possibility of a brighter and healthier future.
