Dear Supporters,
Today we want to tell you about developments from 3 of our partner organisations.
Unified Learning Centre
One exciting new development that occurred this quarter is that GVI’s Healthcare volunteers began teaching health care education classes at The Unified Learning Centre (ULC). This is a local school set up by the Grassroots Human Rights Education & Development Foundation (GHRE). Their aim is to provide a safe environment for Burmese children to come and learn. These healthcare classes cover topics from basic hygiene and anatomy to having a healthy, balanced lifestyle, sports education, and much more.
A New Project at CDC
Another development this quarter is that this school year, GVI Phang Nga and The Community Development Centre (CDC) took on an exciting new project – a daily agriculture class, led by the GVI Teaching Children volunteers. This class is a great way for our volunteers to teach the CDC grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 students about different types of plants and their life cycles, organic gardening and the dangers of pesticides, common garden pests and diseases, and how to successfully maintain a garden. Along with teaching a wide variety of agricultural topics, GVI has also helped the CDC set up a small vegetable garden.
GVI helped the CDC construct and pay for the three planter boxes that our agriculture classes’ garden currently resides in, and we have hopes of expanding our garden to ten planters by the end of the academic school year. With an additional seven boxes constructed, the agriculture class could hopefully be responsible for growing a large portion of the fruits and vegetables that the CDC consumers on a daily basis.
Camillian Centre Update
One of our long term partners, The Camillian Social Centre, accepted two new pupils into their centre in April and May, bringing their total student count to 13. They’ve planted a large-scale vegetable garden to provide food for the centre, started a chicken farm with 300 chickens (The chickens were purchased entirely with donations- thank you!) to collect and sell eggs, started farming frogs and catfish, and have planted a number of fruit trees around the centre. One of the Phang Nga Service Learning groups recently helped Camillian make some planter boxes that will be used to grow herbs and spices as an addition to their garden. We have been able to support Camillian by buying one/third of their chickens.
Thank you for your continued support!
With Gratitude,
GVI Thailand
