Anticipating the Moment of Helping Others

By Children Are Us Foundation | Cheer

At the Zhongshan Tea Academy on Chang’an West Road, you might see a volunteer wearing a vest on Saturdays. His name is Shih-Cheng (anonymous), and he also works at the Children Are Us Foundation’s Zhonghua branch. He volunteers at the tea academy during his time off.

To prepare Shih-Cheng for his volunteer role, a series of training sessions and internships were arranged beforehand. When he first started volunteering, his age and nervousness caused him to shake while carrying plates and speak hesitantly. However, he was determined to improve. With the guidance of his colleagues and the use of specialized aids, his hands stopped shaking, and his speech became more fluent. Every time he enthusiastically greets customers with a loud "Welcome!" in the shop, it adds a touch of warmth and charm, making customers feel welcomed and valued.

As Shih-Cheng became more accustomed to his volunteer duties, his family, concerned about his age and potential health issues, requested that he stop volunteering and rest during his time off. Shih-Cheng understood their concerns but truly enjoys serving and interacting with others. He finds great joy and fulfillment in the process of helping people. After discussing with his family, he decided to reduce his volunteer hours to twice a month. This compromise allows him to continue his passion for service while reassuring his family.

Seeing Shih-Cheng’s dedication and heartfelt approach as a volunteer is truly touching. We welcome everyone to visit the Zhongshan Tea Academy and, if you see Shih-Cheng or other Children Are Us volunteers, please offer them a simple compliment. It will make their day!
