Building Confidence Step by Step

By Children Are Us Foundation | Cheer

A-Bao (pseudonym), in his forties, spent most of his life working before coming to the sheltered workshop to take on tasks suited to his abilities. Alongside his work, he joined a band to bring new experiences into his life. Learning music was not easy for him; facing traditional sheet music, he often struggled due to cognitive limits and worried about falling behind.

To ensure everyone could learn comfortably, the social worker adapted the materials, converting standard staff notation into easy-to-read numbered musical notation and guiding the members step by step. Starting from recognizing rhythms and following the numbered notes, A-Bao practiced each melody repeatedly. Despite facing difficulties, continuous encouragement helped him keep trying and gradually build confidence in his performance.

After long-term practice, A-Bao can now read the numbered notation independently, maintain steady rhythms, and collaborate seamlessly with fellow members, becoming an indispensable part of the band. Music has not only enriched his life but also allowed him to recognize his own learning capacity and personal value. Through tailored support and companionship, everyone can fulfill their potential at their own pace, find their place on stage, and showcase their confidence and growth.
