IsraAID was among the first international humanitarian aid NGOs to respond to the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. For the last year, the organization has been supporting countless communities affected by this crisis - including women and children who fled to Moldova, as well as those who have remained in or returned to Ukraine. We are continuing to provide emergency support across protection; water, sanitation, and hygiene; education; and access to essential items.
Staying warm in winter
This winter, temperatures in Ukraine and Moldova plummeted to -4°C / - 20°F. Damage to the national grid in Ukraine, and frequent power cuts in both countries, made it impossible to heat homes, hospitals, and shelters. IsraAID distributed generators to community shelters, health clinics, and schools, and thermal clothing and blankets to individuals. In total, we helped more than 17,000 people keep warm this winter.
Mental health and psychosocial support
Other recent programming includes completing the training of 60 expert psychologists in war-specific techniques that build on their existing professional knowledge, as part of a national MHPSS initiative in partnership with the Office of the First Lady of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, and a local NGO. The psychologists are now providing ongoing support to patients and staff in hospitals, as well as deploying ad-hoc according to need. For example, 20 psychologists recently supported survivors, families, and first responders after a deadly strike on an apartment block in Dnipro that killed nine people and injured more than 60 others.
Safe water access and medical care
We have also provided more than 600,000 liters of safe drinking water for more than 60,000 people, and helped more than 43,300 people access primary and emergency medical care. This includes delivering 1,981 consignments of medicine and medical items to 119 partners, as well as supporting mobile clinics in hotspots.
As we mark one year of emergency response in Ukraine, we know this crisis isn't going away. With your support, IsraAID will continue delivering essential programs for vulnerable Ukrainians, as long as we are needed.
