IsraAID Ukraine: Responding to a crisis within a crisis

By IsraAID Ukraine | IsraAID staff

Responding to a crisis within a crisis

Six days ago, IsraAID Ukraine launched an emergency response in southern Ukraine - less than 24 hours after a critical dam on the Dnipro River suffered severe damage, causing an immediate humanitarian emergency. Alongside urgent aid distributions, we completed first aid training for local service providers and volunteers in rural areas serving as transit points for communities fleeing the Kherson region. We are also distributing urgently needed items such as blankets, towels, water treatment kits, and bottles of drinking water to the Kherson region, where over 16,000 people were evacuated. Although floodwaters are beginning to recede, thousands of Ukrainians remain displaced from their damaged homes. IsraAID will continue to provide critical support.

Ongoing support for the most vulnerable: protection, safe water, and health

IsraAID delivers a protection activity in Ukraine almost every day. We continue to prioritize the most vulnerable people, especially children, who continue to be heavily affected by stress. In Odesa, we are partnering with libraries to deliver Child-Friendly Space activities for some 200 children each month, providing a safe space for them to process their emotions and experiences through play and learning. We are also working with a school-based parents' association to 'help the helpers'; during March 2023 alone, we trained 81 people who work with children in schools on topics such as psychological wellbeing, child protection, and effective communication skills.

IsraAID also continues to work with some 30 partners who provide primary and emergency healthcare
in Ukraine. This is essential as often in emergencies, basic hygiene practices fall by the wayside,
creating more long-term needs that must be addressed eventually and only worsen while they wait.
Most recently, we have partnered with Ukrainian NGOs and local dental clinics to train children
aged 6-10 in basic dental hygiene and distribute dental care kits. In addition, we have equipped 13
hospitals and 15 mobile clinics, as well as tens of shelters and Red Cross branches, through our Tulcea Humanitarian Logistics Hub.

Finally, we recently installed six new reverse osmosis systems to provide safe drinking water to the municipality of Mykolaiv. These systems have larger capacity than the four we previously installed, helping to meet ongoing high demand. Combined, the systems IsraAID installed have now processed more than 1.28 million liters of safe water.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
