This summer Diakassan, Kadiatou, Awa and Korotoumou spent several weeks in an innovative STEM camp called iNERDE. This camp aims to help African youths discover their potential in STEM fields and other modern fields that require technical literacy. Only a few schools partner with iNERDE, and we feel very fortunate to have our children participate! They embraced this opportunity for innovative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and entrepreneurship.
The children also engaged in vocational training over the summer, with
Adama & Lassine learning carving and engraving, Fousseyne and Allassane practicing carpentry, and Bille and Salle becoming versed in auto mechanics. Sports activities rounded out the children’s time off, with four of the kids practicing for basketball championships, while Korotoumou et Diakassan continued to train with the national Tae Kwon Do team.
In August the children received a visit from U.S. Embassy Bamako personnel, who brought gifts of food and supplies. We are grateful to the U.S. Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, which sponsored the visit and generous donations. The Americans enjoyed a tour of ACFA’s facility and were introduced one by one to each child. The kids treated them to a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, which prompted one of the Marines to
observe: "Watching the Tae Kwon Do demonstration was very impressive. We joked about allowing the girls to use us as dummies for their demo before it started, but after three seconds in, we were all glad that we didn’t! I hope they continue their progress; they are all very talented."
Our children continue to thrive and grow in amazing ways, thanks to your kind support! We are honored and humbled to witness the profound transformation in each child’s life. Thank you for being a part of the ACFA family!
