Project Report | Feb 27, 2024
Moving forward in uncertain times

By Edgar R Barillas | OLI Board President

If you are interested in Guatemala you might be aware that the country is going through challenging times. National elections were held last year, and one party won a clear advantage in a process that by design is run and overseen by a large number of independent volunteer citizens. Despite this, the office of the attorney general led an unremitting judicial campaign against the results, the winning candidates, their political party and even the electoral authority and the volunteers! Fortunately, the vast majority of society and the international community supported the electoral results and backed the transfer to the new administration of the government executive power in January 2024.

Why is this relevant to OLI's work and your support for it? The core of cnbGuatemala.org, the website that constitutes our main focus, is the Guatemalan national curriculum that was implemented as a direct consequence of the peace accords signed in 1996. Despite its weaknesses, that curriculum was designed to promote democratic values, knowledge and skills in students, to acknowledge the worth of a very diverse national population (including over 20 different peoples and their languages) and ensure that war never blighted Guatemala again. And OLI's work is instrumental in ensuring that this curriculum, and educational resources to teach it, are available every day to teachers throughout the country.

Democracy starts at home and in the community, but it grows strong in schools. Your donations aren't just money helping teachers: they are a very real contribution to making democracy strong in Guatemala. Please continue to help us as you have until now, and please share this message with your family, friends and colleagues. We urgently need to grow our donor base and reach more teachers and schools.

Thank you.
