Story of Joyce and Celina

On 11th June 2016, sisters Nabukera Joyce (16 years) and Nakasolya Celina (9 years) were referred to us by the Child and Family Protection Unit officer at Nansana Police Station after they were rescued from a situation of aggravated child labour. The girls were working at the home of one Swaibu as house maids. They were engaged in house cleaning, washing clothes and taking care of his home. Swaibu was taken into Police custody as efforts to trace for the children’s parents were underway. When the AHCM Social Worker talked to the children, he found out that they knew their home but they did not want to go back because they would not be able to attend school as well as have regular meals. They preferred staying with an Aunt despite the fact that they would not go to school but were sure they would have meals regularly. When Joyce learnt about the vocational school opportunity for her to be able to gain a skill, she was so happy and overwhelmed. She said in her own words, now I have hope to a skill that will change my life and that of my family. Joyce looks at gaining the skill so that she can help her HIV Positive mum and another sibling. Supporting the sustainable Skills for the Youth project is going to help Joyce and many younger girls and boys rescued out of child labour. They will gain a skill that will help them have gainful work. You can also tell a friend to support this project. You can help make a change in the lives of these girls

Future plan

  •  Continue with renovation of the school
  • Closing up the renovated classroom block with windows and doors
  •  Work on the full construction plan of the vocational school
  • Fundraising more • Working on the work plans • Setting up the training rooms
  •  Awareness of the vocatonal center in the Districts of Wakiso, Mpigi and Mityana
