Project GlobalGiving #70748: “Sustained Community Support for 150 People Living with HIV in the Dominican Republic through CEPROSH’s Comprehensive Care Services (SAI)”.

Organization ID: #104508

Quarterly Report: Reporting Period: August 1 – October 31, 2025

Introduction

During the period from August 1 to October 31, 2025, the planned project activities were successfully carried out according to the established timeline. The main objective was to contribute to the re-engagement of users who had discontinued treatment, promote adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and strengthen retention among People Living with HIV (PLHIV) receiving care at the Comprehensive Care Services (SAI) of the Centro de Promoción y Solidaridad Humana, Inc. (CEPROSH). In some of these community encounters, prevention talks were also included.

Activities and Results Achieved

Activity and Number of Beneficiaries / Actions:

- Delivery of medications in communities (transport by community promoters): 31

- Re-engagement of users who had discontinued treatment: 78

- Follow-up visits for re-engaged users: 40

- Viral load tests performed: 221

- Trips to municipalities and other provinces for medication delivery: 7

Project Impact

This project has had a significant impact on users of CEPROSH’s Comprehensive Care Services. Thanks to the resources provided, it was possible to ensure treatment continuity both at home and in clinical settings—particularly for individuals facing barriers to accessing healthcare—thus contributing to HIV epidemic control in the Dominican Republic.

A key achievement was the successful re-engagement of 78 PLHIV who had previously discontinued treatment, made possible through the active intervention of the community team and continuous clinical follow-up. Psychosocial evaluations were also conducted to identify underlying factors contributing to treatment interruption and to develop personalized follow-up plans.

Additionally, medical care and viral load testing were provided to 221 users, fostering treatment adherence and regular attendance at medical appointments—both essential steps toward achieving viral suppression and undetectability.

In summary, this quarter demonstrated sustained progress in the retention, monitoring, and accompaniment of people living with HIV, reinforcing CEPROSH’s commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate, and continuous care.

Success Stories

1. Male, 64 years old, Haitian migrant: Presented with a severely infected gluteal ulcer with a strong odor. Six follow-up visits were conducted for local wound care and sample collection for culture, which identified two types of bacteria. Thanks to the prescribed treatment, his health condition improved significantly.

2. Male, 34 years old, Haitian migrant: Diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis with two months of progression. At the first visit, he presented with respiratory difficulty and poor adherence to treatment due to severe oral candidiasis, which prevented him from eating and taking his medication. Through this program, he received the necessary medication and, at his latest visit, showed notable improvement, weight gain, and an oxygen saturation of 98%.

3. Male, 57 years old: Could not attend the SAI because he is the primary caregiver for his wife, who has terminal cancer. Despite being unable to travel for care, he demonstrated excellent adherence to treatment, highlighting the importance and value of community-based accompaniment throughout his process.
