In 2009, President Barack Obama was the first president to officially proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the goal of “increasing awareness about this issue, preventing future crimes, and aiding victims”. This year, President Joe Biden changed the name to Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, saying “We renew our commitment to stand with survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and dismantle a culture that is complicit in allowing sexual violence to continue.”
The Sexual Violence Prevention Association (SVPA) successfully piloted several new initiatives for Sexual Assault Awareneess and Prevention Month (SAAM). First, we partnered with 21 student organizations for our first-ever SAAM fundraiser on the GlobalGiving platform. We discussed sexual violence on their campuses and worked with university administration to ensure future collaboration.
We also partnered with several small businesses that are survivor-owned. Through these partnerships, we were able to provide information, research, and materials regarding sexual violence prevention to over 200,000 people.
Lastly, we partnered with two podcasts to raise awareness about sexual violence prevention. The podcasts, My Favorite Murder and That’s Messed Up, discussed the importance of sexual violence prevention to their audiences of over 20 million listeners.
Your continued support empowers us to prevent sexual violence for thousands of people across the country. Thank you!
