Scientific community empowers Tahanan’s girls
After examining Tahanan Sta. Luisa’s website and emailing and phoning Tahanan, representatives from Thermo Fisher Scientific visited Tahanan Sta. Luisa to explore areas for collaboration. Thermo Fisher Scientific operates a Global Business Services Centre in the country with a large team dedicated to clinical research and customer support in the healthcare and biotech industries. They had recently launched a Women’s Empowerment Business Resource Group (BRG)—focused on creating opportunities and support systems for women and girls. After learning more during their visit about the objectives and programs of Tahanan for vulnerable and disadvantaged girls, the Thermo Fisher representatives committed their support.
They chose to start by building a greenhouse to enhance the girls’ urban farming project. On August 1, 2025, the Thermo Fisher team began setting up the greenhouse while some members of the group repainted the girls’ rooms. They also pledged to renovate the rooms to create a more comfortable and uplifting environment, and to provide individual cabinets for the girls' personal belongings.
The following month, Tahanan Director Joy Tabaosares was invited to be the guest of honor at the company’s 1st-year anniversary celebration. She talked at length about Tahanan and met members of the PRIDE+ and Business Resource Group (BRG) teams who in turn reiterated their continuing support.
The next month Tahanan was invited to Thermo Fisher’s “Belonging Week Celebration.” As part of the event, the girls set up a bazaar inside the company’s premises to display and sell their handcrafted products. The day was made even more special by a STEM activity - a fun and hands-on Strawberry DNA Extraction experiment organized for the girls. The company had noticed the girls' curiosity and excitement about science, especially when they heard the girls confidently recite the Periodic Table of Elements during their visit. This insight encouraged the Thermo Fisher team to nurture the girls’ interest in scientific learning and discovery.
The day’s celebration concluded with song and dance performances from the girls, who later danced and sang alongside Thermo Fisher Scientific staff - making for a truly heartwarming and memorable experience of connection, empowerment, and community. Everyone looked forward to continuing the collaboration in the months and years ahead.
