Rona came to Tahanan Sta. Luisa at age 13 after experiencing sexual and physical abuse and hunger while living on the streets. She arrived withdrawn and shy, but wanted to go to school even as she struggled with reading and writing.
At Tahanan, Rona found a safe place to heal and a second chance at education. After taking alternative learning lessons, she was able to start formal schooling in 2019. When she turned 25 in 2023, she transitioned to Tahanan’s Independent Living Program, living on her own in a rented space nearby. She is guided and monitored by Tahanan’s social worker as she continues her schooling with support from a donor couple. She hones her practical skills in sewing (where she excels), painting, and crochet activities at Tahanan. She aims to enroll in a technical certificate course when she finishes senior high school and to start working.
Rona expresses in her own words the changes in her life in a letter to the donor couple who head the scholarship foundation which funds her continuing education. (Translated from Filipino to English)
Rona: Because of you, I learned little by little that life does not end with the hardship where one started. I learned that wherever one started, she has the opportunity to change and rise as long as someone believes in her and is ready to help. Every time I go to school, I bring not only my life's hopes but also your love, trust, and support.
I am finishing this school year on the technical-vocational-livelihood track of senior high school. I want to increase my knowledge of sewing and livelihood products. If given the chance, I would like to give you my creations as my small thank you gift.
I promise not to waste the opportunities you gave me. I will do my best to finish my studies, to have a beautiful future, and some day to help others the same way you have helped me. You have been a big part of my new life.
