As part of its commitment to community-based coastal resource management, DLSU-COSCA has been making an effort to conduct mangrove tree planting activities together with its partners in the Lian, Batangas initiative.
Last November 2021, in partnership with the Lian Fisherfolks Association Inc. (LFAI), we were able to plant 500 seedlings of Avicennia sp. (Kalapinay) at Sitio KayReyna, Barangay Lumaniag. The activity was conducted in observance of the National Environmental Awareness Month which is celebrated every November each year.
Moreover, we are also one with environmental advocates in celebrating the International Day of the Forests last March 21, 2022. In partnership with DLSU- Industrial Management Engineering Society (IMES) and LFAI, we were able to plant 672 seedlings of Avicennia sp. at the same planting site.
This regular activity does not only support mangrove reforestation but also provides livelihood to the members of LFAI, who are mostly local fishers. Through the seedling fee, LFAI members were able to uplift the environmental and economic status of their community. The activity is part of the Lasallian Environmental Sustainability and Governance (L-EnviSaGe) program of DLSU-COSCA.
