Empowering Local Fishers, Empowering Local Communities

The Lian Fisherfolks Association (LFA) is the local steward of a marine protected area in Talim Bay, Batangas, Philippines. Through the years, it has undergone several capacity-building and enhancement activities facilitated by De La Salle University (DLSU) in relation to conservation and protection of its marine ecosystem in Talim Bay. Last May 8, 2017 marked LFA’s willingness in helping and empowering other local fishers from other coastal barangays to be more participative on the Integrated Coastal Resource Management Program (ICRMP).  With the collaboration efforts of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resource Officer (MENRO-Lian, Batangas) of the Department of Environment Natural Resources-Region 4-A, Lian Fisherfolks Association (LFA) and Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) conducted a reef check and survey on the reef of Sitio Mt. Dew in Barangay Matambungkay as requirement for establishing it as Marine Protected Area (MPA). To date, LFA and COSCA continuously facilitate the community organizing and education of key leaders in lobbying and crafting policies and barangay ordinances for the establishment of Marine sanctuary.
