Summary

Poor hand hygiene increases the spread of infections among school children. Many schools in Nigeria lack proper hand washing facilities and health education. This project will organize a school health program in Abuja to mark World Hand Hygiene Day. Five hundred school children will receive hand hygiene lessons, demonstrations on proper hand washing, and hygiene supplies such as soap. The program will help reduce the spread of infections in schools.

Challenge

Hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent infections such as diarrhea and respiratory illness. According to the World Health Organization, proper hand washing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections. Many schools in low income communities lack soap, clean water, and health education on proper hand hygiene.

Solution

The project will visit selected schools in Abuja during World Hand Hygiene Day to teach proper hand washing practices. Health workers will demonstrate correct hand washing steps and explain why hand hygiene helps prevent disease. Soap and hygiene materials will be distributed so students can practice and maintain good hygiene habits.

Long-Term Impact

Teaching children proper hand hygiene can reduce the spread of infections in schools and homes. When students learn these habits early they are more likely to maintain them throughout life. Improved hygiene practices can lead to fewer illness related school absences and healthier school communities.
