2023 in Review: Looking Back for Lessons Learnt

By Jimmy Oluoch | Project Leader

New look face!
New look face!

Dear friends, partners, advocates & champions of children’s education,

We have started the 2024 school year! For the first time since COVID-19, it is starting in the usual month of January. We are glad to still have you on the team and grateful for another successful year. Your support has enabled us to provide quality education for children at Acres of Mercy Learning Centre.

We take a look at key highlights of what we have been able to achieve together this year beginning in January.

When we began the year (i.e. 23rd January 2023), the school enrolment was 46 with 23 boys (50%) and 23 girls (50%), a capacity of (24%). We began providing access to students via providing affordable school transport to learners within a six-kilometer radius of the school.

During the same time, we set up a small laboratory to support the teaching of Integrated Sciences at the Junior Secondary School level.

In the second term, the students attended the first Kenya Private Schools Association Sports Day in Machakos Town as we provided opportunities for the learners to nurture their soccer skills.

During the third term we

-          Enrollment at the end of October 2023 was 125, 63 Boys (50.4%), and 62 (49.6%) girls. This represented a capacity of 66%.

-          We had 15 learners (5 boys & 11 girls) in Grade 6 & 13 learners in Class 8 (3 boys & 10 girls) completing the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment & Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Summative Examinations.

-          1 learner (boy) a special needs education learner dropped out and was unable to transition.

-          We held a transitioning event for learners in Pre-School to shift into Early Years Grade School.

-          100% of Class 8 learners received opportunities to continue their education either in Secondary Schools or in relevant Technical Institutions & Vocational Training centers.

-          We began constructing our Junior Secondary Science Laboratory in December. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2024.

-          Enrollment by 25th of January 2024 into the third week of the new school year stands at 98, with 56 girls, (57%) & 42 Boys, (43%) from 46 about the same time last year. This is a 113% improvement.

-          38 students i.e. 30% of learners have either not reported, having been transferred by their parents citing economic challenges (25 students) or have transitioned to secondary education (13 students).

-           The students not returning mostly because of economic challenges are about 18%

-          2% of learners have left the school because their guardians/parents feel they are not satisfied with the school’s offerings. This is something we will engage past and present parents/guardians on to meet their needs.

As we move forward into 2024, we will continue to raise funds for completing the Junior Secondary Section infrastructure as well as provide quality learning with the Comprehensive School Setup through purchasing quality, relevant learning resources and developing programs that support our vision for learning & teaching.

Thank you for your continued support! We look forward to another year of working together to provide quality education accessible to all children and deliver on our commitment to nurture every learner's potential!
